The Warshawski Sail is a key component to interstellar travel. The sail is a pair of inclined plates hundreds of kilometers in diameter, located above and below the ship. The sail is useless in normal space, but while in hyperspace, the sail harnesses gravity pockets that would otherwise destroy a vessel to attain faster-than-light travel. Additionally, the sail can trap an extremely powerful eddy of energy, which can be siphoned off to power the ship.

An component of the sail is the tuner. It is a major system on the sail. If the tuners go unchecked, it would be a catastrophe, but they are a simple thing to check out.

In 1296 PD, the sail was invented by Dr Adrienne Warshawski on Earth. (On Basilisk Station)

After the warshawski sail was invented, Tanakov wrote his book, the Tenets of War, about similar ideas to Sun Tzu and General Clausewitz. (The Honor of the Queen)
