The Volsung Mercenaries were a mercenary group, created in the early 16th Century PD by former Andermani national and mercenary Cutler Gensonne. Their side occupation was piracy, hitting mostly small mining colonies and freighters.

History[]

The Volsung Mercenaries were created by former Andermani national and mercenary Cutler Gensonne. In 1528 PD, following the conquest of the Tomlinson System by the Anderman Empire, Gensonne and a cabal of fellow conspirators attempted an unsuccessful coup against Gustav Anderman, but failed. Because Gensonne was only peripherally involved and partially redeemed himself, Anderman granted him clemency and one of the captured conspirator's frigates to leave the Empire. Gensonne would subsequently bestow the rank of Admiral upon himself and establish the Volsung. (MA2,MA4)

Initially operating from a base on the fringes of the Solarian League, the Volsungs eventually relocated to the Walther System in the Silesian Confederacy.

In the early 1540s PD, the Volsung Mercenaries were hired by the Axelrod Corporation to conquer the Manticore System. Axelrod's aim was control of the recently discovered local wormhole junction. In 1543 PD, a 16-unit Volsung force under Gensonne's command was defeated by the weaker Royal Manticoran Navy. During that battle, the Volsungs fought according to Solarian naval doctrine. (MA2)

They were later lured into the Battle of Danak with Operation Embuscade and the Battle of Walther with Operation Verrӓterweg to avoid exposing Axelrod's actions. (MA3)

Organization[]

In the early 1540s PD, a privy headquarters of the Volsungs was located in the city of Rochelle on the planet Telmach in the Silesian Confederacy. (MA2)

Order of Battle[]

As of 1543 PD, the Volsung operated:

  • three battlecruisers of two classes
  • four heavy cruisers of three classes
  • two small light cruisers of one class
  • seven destroyers of three classes:
For detailed order of battle see: Battle of Manticore (1543 PD)#Volsung Mercenaries

In 1544 PD, the Volsung fleet included

Discipline[]

Volsungs' senior officers practiced quite informal duty relations, even during a battle. It seems within their underground mercenary organization they acted like partners and cooperators.

Uniform[]

The uniforms used by the Volsungs were like a Solarian dress uniform[1], but insignia on the collar were similar to those used in the Tahzeeb Navy[2].
