Samuel Johnson (18 September 1709 CE – 13 December 1784 CE) was an English author who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer.

One of his quotes, remembered by Michelle Henke in 1914 PD, was: "Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully." (HH9)
