Patten was a Havenite citizen and a crewman of the People's Navy.
In 1886 PD, he served aboard a PN warship that intercepted and destroyed a Mesan slaver. Two Mesan guards and a young slave woman named Barbara were picked up in a lifeboat[1], and Barbara was freed. About a year later, she and Patten got married, and she took his name. (CS2)
