"Our Sacred Honor" is an Honorverse short story written by David Weber and published in the 2017 science fiction anthology Infinite Stars by Bryan Thomas Schmidt. Its plot is set twenty years before the beginning of the main series of novels, and centers on the early life of Eloise Pritchart.
Plot[]
Eloise Pritchart and her much younger sister Estelle live in genteel poverty in DuQuesne Tower, one of the enormous residential towers in the Havenite capital city of Nouveau Paris. Eloise is uncomfortable with Estelle reading forbidden literature that could get her into trouble with the Mental Hygiene Police. She reminisces about the sorry state of the People's Republic of Haven, and how much of its citizenry have resigned themselves to leading a work-free, uninspired Dolist existence.
Some time later, Estelle is abducted, raped and murdered by a gang. Eloise investigates and brutally avenges her beloved sister, leaving not a single one of her tormenters alive. She then seeks comfort with her friend and confidant Kevin Usher, explaining to him that Estelle was the victim of a failed system, a system that had corrupted the brilliant vision Michèle Péricard had when she founded the Republic of Haven. She tells him of the Founding Fathers of the ancient United States of America, from whom Péricard had taken many of her ideals, and they vow to bring those ideals back, no matter how long it takes.
