The Manticore class was a class of three superdreadnoughts developed and operated by the Royal Manticoran Navy from the middle of the 18th to the turn of the 20 Century PD.

History[]

When the Star Kingdom of Manticore decided to build its first superdreadnought, the design was to be "fit to engage and defeat any ship-of-the-wall now in commission or under construction", a task considered achieved by the first ship, HMS Manticore. HMS Sphinx and HMS Gryphon followed over the next fifteen T-years.[1] With more active defenses and twice the graser broadside of the Ad Astra-class dreadnoughts, they were powerful enough to compete even with Solarian ships of the time.

The originally plan was to build nine ships of the class to form a consistent wall of battle together with the dreadnoughts. They first saw combat in the San Martin War, but after that easy success, funding for the other six planned ships was cut off and the first three vessels were used as mixed battle squadron flagships.

Sphinx and Gryphon were decommissioned and replaced by the lead ships of two newer classes, while Manticore was refitted as a flagship; she was eventually decommissioned in late 1905 PD. (HH1, Companion)
