Ignaz Semmelweis (1818 – 1865 CE) was a Hungarian physician and an early pioneer of antiseptic procedures.

He proposed that women could be saved from dying of childbed fever simply by the regular cleaning of the attending physician's hands and instruments. He ended up in an asylum because nobody believed him at the time.

Semmelweis University on Beowulf was named after him. (HHA6.3: BATB)
