Dr. Herlander Simões was an Alpha line Mesan citizen and hyper physicist.

Biography[]
Herlander Simões was born on Mesa in 1862 PD. By 1921 PD, he was one of the Gamma Center's key scientists working on the streak drive. He was married to Harriet Simões and had an adopted daughter, Francesca.
When his daughter, who had been bred to be a highly-intelligent Alpha line human, began developing symptoms of what hundreds of years earlier would have been called autism, he sought medical care for her, even offering to pay for it with his own financial resources. Mesa's Long-Range Planning Board refused to permit him and his wife to continue to care for her when Francesca shut down completely. Francesca was put to death ("culled") instead. His relationship with his wife failed due to his inability to cope with the loss, and Harriet eventually left him to continue her life.
The experience left him desperate and resulted in his defection to the Republic of Haven with the help of Victor Cachat and Anton Zilwicki as well as Jack McBryde, Gamma Center's senior security chief. McBryde set up his "death" during the explosion of Gamma Center to keep the Mesan Alignment from pursuing him. McBryde failed to join him, unable to complete his preparations before he was forced to set off the explosion to avoid arrest by Isabel Bardasano. Simões was thought by the Mesan Alignment to have died at Gamma Center. (CS2)
Dr. Simões provided Havenite President Eloise Pritchart with evidence of the Mesan Alignment's activities, leading to her traveling to Manticore, the end of the Second Havenite-Manticoran War, and the formation of the Grand Alliance. (HH12, HH13)
