HMS Roland was the lead ship of the eponymous class of destroyers built by the Royal Manticoran Navy.
Service Record[]
Developed after the First Havenite-Manticoran War to make full use of technological advances such as multi-drive missiles, she served as the flagship of Destroyer Squadron 301, attached to the Tenth Fleet in the Talbott Quadrant, under Commodore Ray Chatterjee.
After the destruction of the New Tuscan freighter Hélène Blondeau, Baroness Medusa decided to send her reply, as well as an ambassador, on board four Roland-class destroyers led by Chatterjee, to the New Tuscany System. Upon their arrival, they discovered the presence of Admiral Josef Byng along with seventeen Solarian battlecruisers and five destroyers: Byng was "showing the flag" in a "friendly" star nation, with Squadrons 112 and 302 of Task Group 3021 of Frontier Fleet. Thanks to a maneuver during alpha-translation, Commodore Ray Chatterjee managed to hide HMS Tristram from New Tuscany's sensors, while Roland, Lancelot, and Galahad approached New Tuscany and assumed a parking orbit.
Under the instructions of Manpower Incorporated, the New Tuscan space station Giselle was blown up, killing forty-five thousand civilians. Assuming a Manticoran attack, Admiral Byng ordered his ships to fire on the Manticorans, destroying Roland and her sister ships with all hands in what became known as the New Tuscany Incident. (SI2)
