A potato
The potato was an edible plant native to the planet Earth, and was one of the chief sources of starch in most regions in which it would grow. It continued to be nutritionally important on most planets on which humans lived.
In the period before the Diaspora of Man, the term "hot potato" meant a situation which was urgent and possibly dangerous, but might be handled by several people - by passing it off just as a literal hot potato would be. (HH1)
Potatoes were among the foods the settlers of the Church of Humanity Unchained took with them to Grayson. (HH2) The crew of the Grayson heavy cruiser Francis Mueller used potato sacks to slide "down" Axial One, a large cargo tube running down the spine of their ship. (HHA4.3: ASNF)
