The Basilisk System was a star system in the galactic north of the Manticore System, containing a terminus of the Manticore Wormhole Junction. It was annexed by the Star Kingdom of Manticore to secure the terminus, which brought in a lot of civilian traffic.
Astrography[]
Basilisk was bordered by the Republic of Haven to the east, the Silesian Confederacy to the west. Manticore was 210 light years to the south.
The system consisted of a G5 star and had a single habitable planet, Medusa, which orbited it at a distance of about seven light minutes.[1] (HH1, HH3)
History[]
After the discovery of the wormhole terminus, the Manticoran government pushed for the annexation of Basilisk, a move that was opposed by several anti-expansionist factions in Parliament, led by the Conservative Association. King Roger III was eventually able to win a majority for the plan by blackmailing the Earl of Summercross, who had been caught taking illegal campaign contributions. (Companion)
In 1865 PD, the system was officially annexed by Manticore to control the terminus with Manticore building a station in the system and assigned Royal Manticoran Navy vessels to protect the system. However, due to muddled politics, the Act of Annexation limited the picket and no fixed fortifications were permitted. Being assigned to the post was soon considered a banishment.
In 1901 PD, the People's Republic of Haven attempted to take over the system through a native uprising, resulting in the First Battle of Basilisk. (HH1)
In 1905 PD, while the local picket had been increased to three battle squadrons, Basilisk was a potential target of the Havenite Operation Perseus I, which had the objective of gaining control of the Basilisk Terminus. (HH3)
In 1913 PD, the Twelfth Fleet of the People's Navy attacked the system in the Second Battle of Basilisk during Operation Icarus. The system picket and orbital infrastructure were destroyed, but a simultaneously attack on the Basilisk terminus of the wormhole junction was repelled by the timely arrival of the Eighth Fleet under Admiral White Haven. Local peerage[]
A peerage for the system, the Duchy of Basilisk, was created and given to then-Crown Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth III. (HHA2.3: QG,Companion)
The planet Medusa eventually became a peerage in its own right, the Barony of Medusa. It was given to Estelle Matsuko for her exemplary work as the planet's governor. (SI1)
