There was a terrible plague on the planet some time before the late 19th Century PD.

A strain of Artemesian measles, a disease possibly originating from the planet and brought to Manticore by a Solarian freighter, was believed to have affected Jean Marrou's mother when she was pregnant, resulting her daughter's blindness.^[1] (HHA2.3: QG)
